For over a century, Domaine Montmartel has cultivated a passion for the land and the vine in the heart of the Rhône Valley. Certified organic for 20 years, our 80-hectare estate flourishes between Visan and Valréas, producing authentic wines crafted with respect for nature and without artificial intervention
Key pillars of the estate
A family story born in 1919, passed down with passion from generation to generation
Gentle viticulture, respectful of wildlife, flora, and soil microbiological life
The perfect balance between the richness of the Visan hillsides and the freshness of the Valréas plateau
Five generations of passionate winemakers
The story of Domaine Montmartel is above all a legacy of transmission, courage, and love for the land. Since 1919, five generations of winemakers have succeeded one another to shape the vineyard as it exists today.
Roots built by hand
It all began after World War I. Our great-grandfather Raoul and his father made the bold decision to convert the family broom-making workshop into a winemaking cellar.
Back then, nothing came easy: they built their first concrete vats in Tulette with their own hands, hauling gravel from the riverbed using only shovels and a horse-drawn cart
Once the cellar was built, they began buying their first grapes from neighboring farmers, and later from across the Rhône Valley. Operating as grape buyers (négociants) gave them an extraordinarily fine understanding of the surrounding vineyards, offering the unique opportunity to acquire the finest parcels over time.
Transmission and Continuity
This is how a vineyard of remarkable quality and great complementarity was established. Over time, the cellar expanded as well. Successive generations took the helm of the estate, perpetuating this heritage with the same commitment to excellence and passion.
Certified organic for over 20 years
At Domaine Montmartel, we believe that every human intervention disrupts natural balance and requires understanding and care. This is why all our parcels have been cultivated according to organic farming principles for two decades. We favor a gentle, thoughtful, and preventive approach.
Fostering biodiversity and soil vitality
To us, a great wine starts with living soil and a healthy vine
Precision canopy management
Short winter pruning to limit bud count, followed by meticulous disbudding (ébourgeonnage) in May and June to aerate the canopy
Controlled cover cropping on high-vigor parcels naturally limits vegetative growth and prevents soil erosion
“An aerated and balanced vine is naturally more resistant to disease and requires far fewer interventions”
Respect for the fruit above all
Our winemaking philosophy is the natural extension of our vineyard work: simplicity, gentleness, and authenticity. When healthy grapes arrive at optimal maturity, the winemaker’s role is to step back and let the unique character of the terroir express itself.
From harvest to tasting
Two bottling approaches
Located across the communes of Visan and Valréas, Domaine Montmartel extends over a high shared plateau overlooking both villages.
The complementarity of two great terroirs
The geographical and geological diversity of the estate allows us to pair each grape variety with its ideal parcel
